Settlers of Catan (Base Set) Internationally acclaimed game of discover, settlement and trade. Players: 3 - 4 Play Time: 60 minutes "A Gamer Needs His Standards" Every Friday night I take a pilgrimage to my favorite local gaming store to scout the newest and greatest table top releases. The first criterion that must be met is MINIMUM 2 PLAYERS (sometimes I find a great game that offers a solitaire scenario, Castle Ravenloft for example). I have passed on GREAT games because I would not be able to enjoy it solely with the Bonnie to my Clyde. I like a game versatile for a nerd night but challenging enough for a heads-up competition. Unfortunately, my spectrum is too specific for most publishing companies and I leave my weekly quest empty handed or expanding on previous sets. Settlers of Catan recaught my eye recently after investigating Ticket To Ride expansions, but realized why I hadn't made the leap...minimum 3 players. Hanging my head in disappointment, I started to walk away from the stacks when I realized that I couldn't be the only one that felt this way. Settler expansions have remedied this conundrum but you need the base set to play them. Hearing my sister's voice echoing in the back of my head (G.T.S), I reached for my smart phone and found a 2-player SOC message board discussion on BoardGameGeek.com that convinced me to buy the game, and I am glad I did. Game Modifiers: (see board set up above)
After a brief run-through, I feel confident that I can make my own individual changes, to strength and diversify game play while still making it fun. Keep checking back for my Quick Review: SOC 2-Player Edition. |
